Welcome! The Cebu 10’s Rugby Tournament is organized by the Cebu Dragons. The CCRFC Dragons were spawned on a hot and humid September afternoon at the Camp Lapu-Lapu parade ground in Lahug, Cebu. The first game of rugby in Cebu was contested by a rag-tag bunch of blokes with mixed sporting backgrounds, and hailing predominantly from beyond Philippine shores. The three Filipino players who participated in that memorable match experienced an epic struggle fraught with blood, sweat and the cries of the mutilated, the likes of which haven’t been seen since the days of the legendary Lapu-Lapu himself. Since then, the Dragons have become the number one predominantly Filipino team in the nation, and with a strong base of young players, the future looks bright. It takes a certain type of person to enjoy full-contact sport, and with Cebu’s fighting heritage, there couldn’t be a better place in the world to search for the next batch of Philippine talent. With rugby quickly growing in a basketball crazy country, more and more people are flocking to the game they play in heaven. The Philippine national rugby team – the Volcanoes, have won Gold and Silver medals in the SEA Games and have competed in the Asian Nations Regional Tournament against Guam, Brunei, Pakistan and India for the past three years. The Dragons have produced 10 international players in recent years, and are looking forward to having many more players represent their country in international competition. Ask any rugger what they love about the sport and there is one phrase that sums it up perfectly. NFL quarterback Joe Theismann was once quoted as saying, “Rugby is great. The players don’t wear helmets or padding; they just beat the living daylights out of each other and then go for a beer. I love that.” |
